Global Solidarity Or Disunity? The Choice Is Ours!

Yuval Noah Harari, an Israeli historian and renowned author opined this on national television. He further accentuated on the fact that even in the last vestiges of history, it is enumerated that most people weren’t aware of the root cause of the epidemic that happened before, stating that probably it was a punishment from the deity that they were being left to suffer the odds of the pandemic.

Now, that is completely opposed to today’s scenario, where humans are scientifically and intellectually advanced to decipher the underlying reason behind the virus. Quite astonishingly, the point is, are we acting accordingly? The so-called WhatsApp university circulates forwards and shares of how someone’s acquaintance getting bruised and escaping an indelible red mark (likely to be caused by the police’s stick) by half an inch…

His actions are being scoffed at and discussed at length. However, does anyone actually take the onus of gently making the concerned person understand that he had erred and that situations are grim enough to be taken seriously? The fact of the matter is, now that we are exposed to gallons of information, there is no excuse for ignorance.

Considering the practice of rinsing hands with soap has been a ritual since times immemorial, however, it was much later that people began contemplating the scientific need for washing hands with soap, as that gets rid of the viruses and bacteria. Gradually and subtly we have emancipated towards trusting science and its developments, and that all our practices have a scientific element attached to it.

‘Trust’ is the main factor that encircles all our convictions. It’s trust in our healthcare system, our healthcare workers and our medical practitioners that has been a ray of sunshine. Professor Harari zeroed in on two important points - The route of disunity and global solidarity. He even made a mention of the previous global crisis like that of the 2008 financial crisis and the 2014 Ebola epidemic, where the US had assumed the role of a global leader.

However, there is a huge void being created now, as we don’t have anyone taking the leadership position, yet it’s to be understood that every crisis is an opportunity, that would eventually make people realise the hazardous effects caused by disunity in days to come…

Now, it's time for mankind to make a choice. As the Professor said would we be travelling down to the course of disunity, or be adapting to the path of global solidarity? If the former is handpicked, the crisis would be much prolonged, whereas global solidarity would ensure victory only towards COVID-19, but also towards all future epidemics. The choice is ours!
